What We Treat

What this therapy helps with

  • Career changes
  • Divorce and separation
  • Relocation
  • Retirement
  • Work stress and burnout
  • Financial stress

Therapy provides structure during periods when familiar roles and routines fall away.

Our Approach

How treatment works

  • Practical and present. Support is grounded in what is happening now.
  • Build resilience. You build the steadiness to handle what is changing.
  • Clarify what matters next. You make decisions from your values rather than pressure.
  • Solution-focused. Brief, practical, goal-oriented work that builds momentum, well suited to life transitions.

Sessions run 50 to 60 minutes by secure video or phone, including evening and weekend times around a changing schedule.

When To Reach Out

Signs a transition is weighing on you

  • You feel stuck between your old life and whatever comes next
  • A major decision has you second-guessing yourself
  • Stress from work or money is spilling into sleep and relationships
  • You do not recognize yourself in your new role
  • Burnout has replaced the drive you used to have
  • A change you chose still feels harder than you expected

Even good changes, like a new job or retirement, can bring real stress and loss.

What To Expect

How transition-focused therapy unfolds

  • Naming what changed. You sort out what you lost, what you gained, and what is still uncertain.
  • Setting clear goals. Solution-focused work identifies what a better next few months would look like.
  • Values-based decisions. ACT skills help you choose based on what matters to you, not just fear or pressure.
  • Building steadiness. You create routines and supports that hold you up while things settle.

Transition-focused therapy is often shorter-term, but it can continue as long as it is helping.

Why Telehealth Works

Support that moves with you

Transitions often come with packed schedules, new commutes, or a move to a new town. Telehealth keeps the same clinician with you through the change, as long as you are in California.

Phone sessions are also available, which helps when your days are unpredictable.

Common Questions

Life Transitions Therapy FAQ

Does Medi-Cal cover therapy for stress and life changes?

Partnership HealthPlan covers outpatient therapy, including for adjustment disorders, usually at no cost to the member, with no referral needed.

Is this short-term therapy?

It can be. Short-term work for a specific issue may take 8 to 16 sessions. Your clinician reviews your goals with you regularly.

Do I need a diagnosis to start?

No. Stress from a major change is reason enough to start. Your clinician will document what is needed for coverage during intake.

Can I fit sessions around work?

Yes. Evening and weekend appointments are available, by video or phone from home.

Can therapy help me make a big decision?

Yes. Your clinician will not decide for you, but therapy can help you clarify your values, weigh your options, and reduce the anxiety that makes decisions harder.

What if I move during treatment?

If you stay in California, you can usually keep your same clinician because sessions are by telehealth. Coverage depends on your plan, and we can help you check.
