What We Treat

What anxiety therapy helps with

  • Generalized anxiety and constant worry
  • Panic attacks
  • Social anxiety
  • Health anxiety
  • Phobias
  • OCD and intrusive thoughts

You do not need a formal diagnosis to start. If worry, panic, or avoidance is getting in the way of your life, that is reason enough to reach out.

Our Approach

How treatment works

  • Understand the worry cycle. Treatment starts with what drives your anxiety and keeps it going.
  • Reduce avoidance. Step by step, you build tolerance for the situations and uncertainty that anxiety tells you to avoid.
  • Practical skills. You learn evidence-based skills you can use between sessions, not just talk about symptoms.
  • Proven approaches. Your clinician draws on CBT and ACT, and EMDR when anxiety is tied to trauma.

Each 50 to 60 minute session, by secure video or phone, usually ends with something specific to practice before the next one.

When To Reach Out

Signs anxiety is taking over

  • You avoid places, calls, or tasks because of how they make you feel
  • Your mind replays worst-case scenarios most days
  • Physical symptoms like a racing heart, tight chest, or stomach trouble with no medical cause
  • You check, reassure, or plan far more than the situation calls for
  • Sleep suffers because your mind will not shut off
  • Panic attacks, or fear of the next one, shape your plans

Anxiety tends to shrink your world a little at a time. The earlier you start, the less ground it takes.

What To Expect

How anxiety care unfolds

  • Intake and screening. Your clinician learns what triggers your anxiety and may use a brief screener like the GAD-7 to set a baseline.
  • Mapping the cycle. Together you trace how a trigger leads to a thought, a body response, and the avoidance that keeps anxiety going.
  • Practice, not just talk. You try new responses in small, planned steps, starting with what feels manageable.
  • Measuring change. You revisit your baseline so you can see whether the worry and avoidance are actually shrinking.

Many patients notice they are avoiding less before they notice they are worrying less. Both count as progress.

Why Telehealth Works

Anxiety care where anxiety actually happens

Anxiety rarely shows up in a therapist’s office. It shows up at home, in the car, and before the phone call you keep putting off. Telehealth lets you practice skills in the real places your anxiety lives.

For people with social anxiety or panic, the drive and the waiting room can be the hardest part of getting help. Starting from a familiar space removes that barrier, so the work can begin sooner.

Try the free GAD-7 screener, guided breathing, and 5-4-3-2-1 grounding on our Therapy Tools page.

Myths & Facts

Common myths about anxiety therapy

MythAnxiety is just a personality trait.

FactAnxiety disorders are common, well-studied, and highly treatable. How you feel now is not a fixed part of who you are.

MythAvoiding triggers is the safest way to cope.

FactAvoidance brings short-term relief but teaches your brain the danger was real. Gradual, supported exposure is what lowers anxiety over time.

MythIf therapy works, I will never feel anxious again.

FactThe goal is not zero anxiety. It is anxiety that no longer decides what you do.

Common Questions

Anxiety Therapy FAQ

Does Medi-Cal cover anxiety therapy?

Yes. Partnership HealthPlan covers outpatient therapy for anxiety disorders, usually at no cost to the member, with no referral and no hard annual session cap for medically necessary care.

Do I need an anxiety diagnosis to start?

No. Many people start therapy without knowing whether what they feel counts as an anxiety disorder. Your clinician will sort that out with you during intake.

Can therapy help with panic attacks?

Yes. Panic attacks are one of the most common reasons people start therapy. Treatment focuses on understanding what happens in your body during a panic attack and reducing the fear and avoidance that keep the cycle going.

How soon can I start?

PMHS has no waitlist. We respond within one hour between 8am and 8pm, or by 9am the next morning, and most patients start within the same week.

Is OCD treated differently from general anxiety?

Yes. OCD responds best to a specific approach called exposure and response prevention, or ERP, which targets the link between intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Your clinician will talk with you about whether that approach fits.

Can I bring my anxiety medication questions to therapy?

You can talk about how medication fits into your life, but PMHS does not prescribe. With your written consent, we can coordinate with your prescriber or help arrange a psychiatric referral.
